The year 2020 marks the 76th anniversary of the Normandy landings, also known as D-Day. First lady Melania Trump honored the historic day with a special tribute on social media.
Express reports that Melania took to Twitter to pay tribute to the historic day over the weekend, retweeting her previous tweet from 2019, during the Trumps’ meeting with President Emmanuel Macron and first lady Brigitte Macron.
“Today, on the 76th Anniversary of #DDay, we remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice & we honor those who courageously served. I cherish my memories from last year’s visit to #OmahaBeach & the Normandy American Cemetery with @POTUS @EmmanuelMacron & Brigitte Macron,” wrote Melania in the caption.
Her update was met with very mixed reactions. Some users also honored the occasion in the replies and praised the first lady. “Thank you for your service and your sacrifice,” said one user.
“Wow, thank you for this stirring and important reminder, so awesome!” said another user.
“God bless our nation and our veterans,” tweeted a third.
Many other users, however, pointed out the actions of her husband, president Donald Trump and noted his actions from last week such as hiding in the White House bunker in the midst of the protests that reached the White House. “Thanks for reminding us that #BarricadeBaby was also afraid to go out in the rain during that visit,” said one netizen.
“Courageously served is something no Trump has ever done! #Birther #Babygate” replied another.
“Girl, if I were you, I would just ride these 5 months out in silence. Get a hobby or something and enjoy what time you have left in the White House,” said another.
The first couple has already been subject to rumors about a turbulent or rocky marriage for a while. Those rumors resurfaced during the controversial photo op that the Trumps’ took the previous week at a church in Washington D.C. where Donald told Melania to smile for the cameras. The first lady maintained her straight face in front of the press that was present and this awkward moment went viral on social media, with many mocking the president and the first lady’s marriage.
“The camera can, contrary to the cliche, sometimes lie, but I have watched this clip over and over and there is something mesmerizingly worrying about Melania Trump’s face in this,” said ABC reporter Louise Milligan.
